The best wired earbuds under $100: 1More Triple Driver

Why you should buy them: These wired earbuds are premium in every way but their price.

Who they’re for: Anyone who wants a really great-sounding set of wired earbuds but is unwilling to spend hundreds of dollars for the pleasure.

Why we picked the 1More Triple Driver:

The adage that you get what you pay for is generally true for audio products like headphones. What has made us big fans of the 1More brand is its ability to redefine that expectation in surprising ways. The 1More Triple Driver in-ear headphones are a great example of this: They exhibit all of the hallmarks of high-end, expensive earbuds, yet manage to keep the price highly affordable for most people.

Their combination of dual balanced-armature drivers matched with a dynamic driver to pump up the lower end is the kind of engineering normally found on products that cost more than double the price of the 1Mores. Even the smaller details are very well ironed out, such as Kevlar-wrapped cables that increase resistance to wear while simultaneously reducing tangles.

Boasting materials like cast aluminum that has been polished and sandblasted for a luxurious feel, even the included carrying case — normally a throwaway pouch that people ignore entirely — has been obviously crafted and built with care. Their inline mic and control buttons are compatible with both iPhones and Android devices.

The 1More Triple Driver sound amazing, with a wide and complex soundstage that warranted an official THX certification. While 1More has many other budget-friendly products, including the newer Dual Driver ANC Pro Wireless, if you’re looking for great sound at the lowest price, we think the Triple Drivers offer the best value.

If the 1More Triple Driver appeal to you, but you want to spend less, check out the Strauss & Wagner EM205. They sound almost as good but cost half the price. They’re also tiny and very lightweight — perfect for tossing in a backpack. If, on the other hand, you want to level up your wired listening, both the $159 Final Audio A4000 and $199 Campfire Audio Satsuma will deliver gorgeously detailed audio. The only caveat: As true in-ear monitors (IEMs), they do not have a mic for calls or buttons for music control.

The Superlux HD 681 are the best budget headphones for music that we’ve tested. They have a very neutral default sound profile with a touch of extra brightness. Although some people may find sibilants sound overly piercing, they’re still well-suited for many audio genres.

These headphones have a comfortable and lightweight fit with large ear cups. Thanks to their semi-open fit, their passive soundstage seems large, natural, and open. While they don’t come with much in the way of additional accessories, they have a cloth pouch to help protect them from dust and scratches when you’re not using them.

Unfortunately, they have a cheap and plasticky build quality that feels low-grade. They also don’t isolate you from much ambient noise around you and leak audio at high volumes. That said, if you’re looking for more affordable headphones for music, they offer a more immersive audio experience due to their design.

Anker is a Chinese company known for their affordable electronic accessories like power banks and charging cables. This brand also makes audio products like speakers and headphones under the ‘Soundcore’ label. Overall, their headphones offer a good price to performance ratio and come in many different styles. Some headphones are also compatible with the Soundcore app, which offers a graphic EQ plus presets to help you customize their sound. Others have an active noise cancelling system that, at times, can nearly rival that of other big brands like Bose and Sony.

The best Anker headphones that we’ve tested are the Anker SoundCore Life P3 Truly Wireless. These in-ears have a comfortable and well-built design that’s stable enough for a run in the park. Out of the box, they have a bass-heavy sound profile that delivers extra thump and rumble, which fans of EDM and hip-hop can enjoy. That said, you can tweak their sound using their companion app offers a graphic EQ and presets. Thanks to their ANC, they can block out an excellent amount of ambient noise around you, whether you’re commuting to work or toiling away in a busy office. You can even adjust the ANC’s level between three different presets to better match the noise around you. However, their battery performance is mediocre, and they have high latency on PCs as well as iOS and Android devices. If you prefer an over-ear design, check out the Anker Soundcore Life Q30 Wireless, which have an even better noise isolation performance.

Headphones Type Comparison Chart

To help you visualize and compare the different types of headphones, here is a chart containing their key factors. Since types like wireless or noise-cancellation headphones overlap with the other types, we decided not to include them anymore.

Comfort is not included in the list of factors considered in the chart. This is mainly because comfort alone is dependent on several more factors such as clamping force, types of cushion, ear cup size, and frankly, preference.

Planar Magnetic

The best audiophile headphones that we’ve tested are the HiFiMan Arya. These unique-looking headphones have an open-back design and use a planar magnetic transducer, which gives them certain advantages over more common headphones with dynamic transducers. They can reproduce a more extended bass response and create a passive soundstage that seems wide, spacious, and as if coming from speakers placed in the room around you.

These headphones are well-suited for lots of audio content, thanks to their neutral and accurate sound profile. They’re comfortable enough for long listening sessions, and their well-built design feels premium and durable. Once you’ve taken the time to adjust their fit, positioning, and seal on your head, they can deliver bass and treble consistently each time you use them, too.

Due to their open-back design, they can’t isolate you from ambient noise, and they leak a lot of audio, so others around you may be about to hear your music if you’re listening to it at a high volume. They also have a slightly underemphasized low-bass, though it’s more extended than the Sennheiser HD 800 S. That said, if you’re looking for audiophile headphones, they’re a suitable choice.

The best headphones for music: Sennheiser HD 560S

Sennheiser

Why you should buy them: Audiophile sound quality from a legendary brand, in a comfortable design that is also remarkably affordable.

Who they’re for: Those who take their music listening seriously, and want an uncompromising set of headphones.

Why we picked the Sennheiser HD 560S:

Audiophiles generally agree that if you’re passionate about music, and you have a listening space that is relatively free of outside sounds, nothing beats a really good set of open-back headphones.

As far as we’re concerned, you won’t find a set of open-back headphones that manage to combine superb sound quality and a reasonable price better than the Sennheiser HD 560S. They’re built to the same audiophile standards as our previous pick, the HD 6XX/HD 650, but use an updated and sleeker design, with angled drivers that do an even better job of reproducing the sound of in-room speakers.

The included detachable cable comes with a 1/4-inch headphone jack, which underlines that Sennheiser considers these to be home/studio critical listening cans, but you’ll also find a 1/4-inch to 3.5mm adapter for use with smartphones and other media playback devices. It’s also worth noting that the Sennheiser HD 560S are the only selection on this list that do not support voice calls or any remote control of a phone or media player’s functions like play/pause.

We haven’t published our full review of the HD 560S yet, but in our time with these amazing cans, we can already confirm that what we observed about the HD 650 is equally true of the HD 560s: “Warm and rigid bass, a midrange that dips close to the ruddy colors of analog tape saturation (without sacrificing an ounce of detail), and a laser tight response up top that helps illuminate vivid clarity and granular instrumental texture across the board.”

If that sounds like the kind of performance you want in a set of headphones, we think you need look no further than the Sennheiser HD 560S. You can certainly spend more to get this level of quality, but you don’t have to.

The Apple AirPods Pro Truly Wireless are the best wireless earbuds that we’ve tested. These earbuds have a powerful ANC system that can block out the low rumbles of bus engines as well as office chatter. They also have an H1 chip, so you can seamlessly pair them with other Apple devices.

If you like to listen to lots of audio content, they have a versatile and fairly neutral sound profile that’s well-suited for most genres. Although they lack a bit of a thumpy low-bass, they can reproduce vocals and lead instruments quite accurately. They also have a comfortable and very stable in-ear fit, which is great if you want to use them during a run in the park. Their sleek and well-built design is certified IPX4 for protection against splashes of water.

Unfortunately, their companion interface is quite limited, and they don’t have any sound customization features to help you tweak them to your liking. They also have a continuous playback time of over five hours, which may not be enough to last you through your workday without pausing to recharge them. On the upside, their carrying case holds roughly five additional charges, and you can even use one while the other charges.

Research and buying tips

Who makes the best headphones?

There are a ton of manufacturers currently making awesome headphones, from major brands to smaller boutique outfits, so there is no clear winner when it comes to the best company in the headphone world.

What’s the best place to buy headphones?

We typically recommend buying from a major retailer like Amazon, Best Buy, or Walmart. Smaller, more specialized local audio retailers might have a set of headphones that you can actually try, which we strongly recommend.

Over-ear/On-ear headphones vs. earbuds: Which is better?

That depends on what you’re using them for and how much you’re willing to spend. At the high-end, over-ear and in-ear headphones can both perform fantastically. For those of us not willing to spend thousands on headphones, over-ear headphones typically offer better bass response and a bigger soundstage, but in-ear headphones are more portable and convenient — especially wireless earbuds. And, because they’re placed right up against (or even inside) your ear canals, they offer the most intimate sound quality you can get.

What type of headphones are best for working out?

True wireless models like the which feature sweat proofing, are far and away the best headphones for working out because you’ll never have wires to deal with.

What headphones should I buy if I don’t want others to hear?

Closed-back over-ear headphones or snugly fitting in-ear headphones are the best way to ensure your favorite tunes won’t leak out into the world around you.

How does active noise-canceling work?

Headphones with this feature use exterior microphones to capture the sound around you. They then reproduce matching frequencies with their phase inverted to cancel ambient noise. How well the system works depends on a wide variety of factors from software to hardware to how well the headphones fit.

Do any headphones use a Lightning connector? Or USB-C?

Yes, you can find both Lightning and USB-C headphones on the market, but given that you might want to use your headphones with something other than a cell phone, we typically recommend you buy an adapter or wireless headphones, rather than headphones with such a specific kind of connector.

Do headphones include a microphone?

These days, virtually all wireless headphones and earbuds include a built-in microphone. That said, some wired models rely on a cable with an inline microphone, while others possess no calling features at all, so be sure to check before you buy if you want to make phone calls.

Do headphones have audio lag?

Some lower-quality wireless models do lag when watching movies and YouTube on your cell phone, but in the vast majority of cases, they do not have audio lag. If you experience lag and your headphones have a companion app that lets you adjust EQ, try disabling those adjustments. Wired headphones won’t have any audio lag at all, and most Bluetooth models have such a small lag it’s mostly imperceptible.

SteelSeries is a Danish company that makes gaming peripherals and accessories, including headphones. Their gaming headsets all share a similar design, and it can be quite challenging to tell them apart, but they have their differences. Most of their models share the same ski-goggle-inspired headband design, which features an elastic strap inside a frame that’s fixed in place. This design is quite comfortable if your head fits within the rigid frame, but if it doesn’t, there’s not much you can do. It can also be tricky to get the tension on the elastic strap just right — how tightly they seal affects their bass performance, so depending on how they fit, they can sound different to different people. That said, SteelSeries provides sound customization options in their companion software to help you find a sound profile that works for you, and some of their more premium models even have an onboard EQ.

The best SteelSeries headphones we’ve tested are the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless. They’re among the most feature-packed models we’ve tested, with not only a low-latency wireless connection for gaming but Bluetooth support so you can chat on your phone while you game, too. Their wireless transmitter also acts as a battery charging station and gives you access to a graphic EQ, along with other customization options, so you can tweak their sound on the fly. The SteelSeries Arctis Pro GameDAC are similarly designed but are for those who prefer a wired connection. Neither headset is fully compatible with the Xbox One, however, so the SteelSeries Arctis 9X Wireless are the way to go if you’re an Xbox gamer. They use Xbox Wireless to connect directly without the need for an adapter but don’t have as many customizable features, unfortunately.

Bone Conduction Headphones

Commercial bone conduction headphones (From: Wikimedia Commons)

As the name may suggest, bone conduction headphones make use of some of your bones as conductors for sound vibrations. To be specific, these headphones create sound waves that bypass both the outer and middle ear in order to directly stimulate your jaw and cheekbones.

Pretty cool, huh?

Bone conduction was first explored by none other than Ludwig van Beethoven. Known as one of the greatest composers to ever lived, Beethoven’s hearing gradually diminished so he “heard” his music by biting a metal rod attached to his piano.

Advantages of Bone Conduction headphones

  • Increased situational awareness: Bone conduction headphones are neither in-ear nor over-ear. These headphones are disconnected to your ears so you won’t have a problem hearing your surroundings while wearing them.
  • Comfortable fit: This advantage comes again from the fact that they’re not placed inside or over your ear. To add to that, they were made to be used for long periods so comfort is definitely always in the minds of its designers.
  • Hearing aid: Bone conduction technology was made to help those with hearing problems. These headphones’ capacity to act as hearing aids is unique and cannot be easily replicated by other headphone types.

Disadvantages of Bone Conduction headphones

  • Sound quality: Conventionally, bone conduction headphones are not used for appreciating actual music. Its vibration technology cannot exactly compare with the sound produced on typical headphones’ speakers.
  • Cost: I guess you saw this one coming already, right? Despite being around for eras already, bone conduction technology is still bleeding edge and is being perfected. Doing so is not cheap at all.

Who should buy Bone Conduction headphones

For obvious reasons, bone conduction headphones are recommended for those who have hearing troubles. This type of headphone technology would drastically improve the quality of life for people with such conditions.

Commercial bone conduction headphones, on the other hand, are great for outdoor sports. Players of beach volleyball, football, and other sports that still require communication should be able to find these headphones useful.

The best headphones for music with extra bass that we’ve tested are the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless. These comfortable Bluetooth over-ears have an overemphasized bass response that may be perceived as a little boomy by some listeners but will please fans of EDM and hip-hop who crave some extra thump and rumble.

They’re compatible with the Sony | Headphones Connect companion app, which grants you access to a graphic EQ as well as audio presets to fine-tune your listening experience. They have a remarkably effective ANC system that filters out a wide range of ambient noise, from passing trucks to the high-pitched hum of an AC unit, meaning you can enjoy your music even in loud or crowded environments. While they should last for over 37 hours on a single charge, they come with a 1/8″ TRS audio cable, allowing for passive audio playback if you’ve run out of battery.

Unfortunately, their integrated microphone delivers sub-par recording quality and makes your voice sound thin and muffled, so they may not be the best option if you also happen to make many phone calls through your headphones. Their touch-sensitive control scheme may also take some time to get used to, though it’s intuitive once you’ve figured it out. If you’re looking for extra thump and rumble, these are also among the best bass headphones we’ve tested.

Two Types of Earbuds

Now, onto the earbuds!

There are two types of earbuds and they differ in how they are worn. Although both the types were designed to go inside your ears, one was not made to go as deep into the ear canal as the other.

The next sections would be discussing earbuds (earphones) and in-ear monitors. Let’s get to it.

Earbuds

Classic black earbuds (From: Pixabay)

Earbuds were made to fit inside your ears and sit just right outside the ear canal. They also have larger speakers as compared to their in-ear counterparts.

Contrary to popular belief, earbuds or earphones were developed around two decades before headphones. The patent for earbuds was awarded to Ernest Mercadier in 1891 just before the electrophone was invented.

Advantages of earbuds

  • Affordability: Earbuds are a lot cheaper than headphones, that’s for sure. However, when you compare the prices of earbuds with in-ear monitors, the former has a little edge.
  • Comfort: Earbuds just sit right outside your ear canal. Rest assured, you won’t be bothered with comfortability problems as well as ear fatigue when you use these.

Disadvantages of earbuds

  • Noise isolation: Earbuds were not made to really get in your ear canals which is why there is a higher chance that noise would penetrate and leak out. This happens especially when your earbuds are loose.
  • Fit: You are more likely to get fitting problems with earbuds as compared to in-ear monitors. This is because earbuds are designed to simply sit right outside the ear canals where it can get loose easily.

Who should buy earbuds

Earbuds are recommended for those who are on a budget. They are extremely cheap and you could basically get them anywhere if you’re not too particular with sound quality.

Also, think of earbuds as the middle ground between in-ear monitors that get inside your ear canals and headphones that sit outside your ears. Simply put, earbuds are the safest bets. If you’re undecided on which type to get, this is the way to go.

In-Ear Monitors

In-ear monitors or in-ear headphones are earbuds that have an elongated structure with a silicone tip. This design allows this type of earbuds to reach deeper into the ears, particularly millimeters into the ear canal.

The tips of these earbuds can also be customized into different sizes and materials. Right off the bat, this gives them the edge over any type of headphones in terms of fit.

When it comes to materials, memory foam tips are starting to gain popularity lately. These tips provide the best comfort and fit since it adjusts to the users’ ear shape.

Advantages of in-ear monitors

  • Customizable fit: This is perhaps the biggest perk that in-ear monitors could offer. These earbuds almost always come with three pairs of silicone tips each with different sizes. The more the tips, the more chances you could find the perfect fit.
  • Noise isolation: In-ear monitors sit a couple of millimeters down your ear canals. The tips of the earbuds would cover the entirety of the canal so it’s basically like wearing earplugs.
  • Sound Quality: These earbuds bring the sound closer to your eardrums. The closer the sound, the more of it you can hear, thus sound quality may appear better in this case.

Disadvantages of in-ear monitors

  • Comfortability: Ironically, despite the customizable fit, comfortability might still be an issue. This is because no matter what size your material you have as ear tips, they will still be sitting in a very sensitive part of the ear.
  • Having to find the right ear tip size and material: finding the right tips can be a tedious process in itself. If you’re not fond of testing out different sizes and materials, then you may appreciate the other type of earbuds better.
  • Safety: In-ear monitors reach the farthest into your ears which means that they bring sounds closest to the eardrums. Exceeding 60-85 decibels while using these headphones can cause damage.
  • Hygiene: Apart from bringing sound closer to your earbuds, in-ear headphones may also bring dirt and debris right into your ear canal. This part of the ear is very delicate so there is always a risk of infection.

To prevent hygiene concerns, be sure to clean your IEMs regularly and properly. Check out this guide to learn more about that.

Who should buy in-ear monitors

Due to their overall fit and portability, in-ear monitors are great for those who are always on the go. Commuters and athletes should benefit a lot from these earbuds.

Performers and musicians should also appreciate the sound quality that in-ear monitors provide. In fact, if you watch a lot of concerts, you would notice the performers wearing these on-stage.

Finally, those who love to watch would love in-ear monitors as well. The same thing goes for those who actually create ASMR videos.

Planar Magnetic

If you’re looking for planar magnetic headphones for music, consider the HiFiMan Arya. They aren’t as well-built as the Sennheiser HD 800 S. However, they have a planar magnetic transducer that helps them create a spacious and natural-seeming passive soundstage, which can make your listening experience more immersive. They also have a very neutral sound profile with a more accurate bass response, so mixes have more thump, rumble, and punch. They’re very well-built and comfortable, with large, spacious ear cups and a detachable audio cable, making it easier to replace if it gets damaged. Ηowever, they aren’t very well-suited for use outside quiet spaces, since their open-back design means they leak a lot of sound and don’t isolate you from ambient noise.

If you want better-built headphones with more breathable ear cups, try the Sennheiser, but if you’re looking for planar magnetic headphones that can reproduce a bit more low-bass, you may prefer the HiFiMan.

  • цена;
  • качественный звук;
  • защита от воды;
  • быстрая зарядка;
  • голосовой набор.

МИНУСЫ:

  • достаточно большой вес;
  • работа автоматического сопряжения через раз;

  • доступная цена;
  • быстрое время зарядки;
  • радиус действия до 10 м;
  • легкий вес наушников;
  • хороший звук;
  • активное шумоподавление.

МИНУСЫ:

  • частый брак;
  • неудобные амбюшуры;
  • недолгая зарядка в кейсе.
